How do you measure success? Is it strictly by looking at the bottom line or does it go much deeper than that? Let’s find out!
Drivers began signing up for the Rigs without Cigs program in August and the program started September 1st, 2017. It is a year long program that drivers can participate in for tips, tools, encouragement and accountability to no longer smoke, dip or chew tobacco. The first quarter has come to an end and it’s time to see if the program is a success or not.
So far, approximately, 150 drivers signed up to be a participant in the Rigs without Cigs program. We have an age range of 27 – 68 years of age that registered. Drivers have been signing up throughout the quarter and each person is at a different stage in his/her attempt to kick the tobacco habit. Some drivers are completely tobacco free, some are in the midst of the struggle and others haven’t started yet.
We are excited to say that 14 drivers are completely tobacco free! Twenty six drivers have cut their tobacco usage in half. Fifteen drivers have just recently started the program so we don’t have usable results on their progress. Six people reported that they have not cut back but plan to start again in January. These results are based on information gathered from drivers through online forms, emails and phone calls. Each driver was able to choose the method in which he/she decided to implement to no longer use tobacco. Some chose to quit “cold turkey, others decided to use nicotine replacement therapy and many chose to try the Quit Key method.
The implementation of the Quit Key system has helped many of the drivers to be successful in kicking the addiction. The Quit Key is a small electronic device that allows tobacco users to use the “tapering off” method. The hand held computer creates a personalized gradual reduction program. It is designed to help people quit smoking gradually, easily and for good! For it to work, you need to find a method that best works for you.
At the end of the quarter we had a random drawing among the drivers who consistently participated in the program. Two winners were chosen to receive prizes valued at $100 each, sponsored by Road Pro Family of Brands. Three people received a download card of the book, Gut Instinct, written by Carolyn O’byrne.
People continue to sign up for the program and we will be tracking their progress over the next several months. We anticipate seeing continued success as we enter the new year. When we asked one driver what he would change about the program, he responded with, “Honestly, I’m firm believer if ain’t broke don’t fix it and this program does work, so keep it up”. He has decreased his cigarette addiction from smoking 3 packs a day down to 1 pack a day. Another driver said “Rigs without Cigs has actually helped me see that I have a problem and I am not alone.”
The Rigs without Cigs program will continue until August 2018. The goal is to have as many people as possible attend the Great American Truck Show in Dallas, Texas and proclaim themselves to be SMOKE FREE on the GATS Health Pavilion stage.

Hi Sandy, thank you for reaching out. I’m not aware of any available programs in Australia at this time. I’ll make sure to forward your question to the correct parties, and make a suggestion for future consideration. Thank you and best wishes~
